Changing the Channel(s)


We want to make sure that YouTube continues to evolve as a place where you can be successful, and take your careers to the next level.  Today, we want to give you an update on two important topics that we know are important to your success on YouTube - Channels and Insights.

Latest Channels design
Your feedback has been super helpful as we’ve experimented with YouTube Channel designs via Cosmic Panda and other initiatives. We’ve listened to that feedback, and we’re ready to share the latest version of Channels with you. You can opt in and play around here.

The main changes you’ll notice are:
  • Customize Your Channel: You can promote your favorite content in the featured tab and choose a template that fits your content.  
  • Engage Your Audience: You’ll be able to publish content to your subscribers through the new Channels feed--even when you don’t have a new video to upload. Videos you “like” and “favorite” will also appear in the feed to keep your subscribers entertained.
  • Expand Your Presence: When viewers go to the watch page, some elements of your Channel follow them (e.g. some of your videos), helping you to maintain your presence across YouTube.

This page is your portal into and out of the latest Channels design, so have fun playing around! Once you opt in, changes you make and publish to your Channel will only be seen by others on YouTube who are opted in via this page, and people who are still opted in to the Cosmic Panda experiment. In a few weeks, we’ll be back in touch before we share this more widely, and let you know when to publish the new channel for everyone to see. This is your chance to get ahead of the game and get your channel looking fabulous.  

We have resources within the Help Center including a Channels Checklist and Guided Help to walk you through the new design, and as always, we’re always looking for feedback, so please share your thoughts with us.

New Analytics
A big part of your success is understanding your audience so that you can increase your subscribers and views, make better content, and make more money. We’ve put together the new YouTube Analytics (formerly YouTube Insight) to help you measure and achieve greater success.  

Analytics is now easier than ever to use, located right within your YouTube.com account, using a simpler design, and with more precise categories that help you compare more metrics to fully understand your audience, channel and monetization.  These changes will debut in the coming weeks--stay tuned for more information.  

We hope these are welcome bits of news, and we’ll be back with another update on both Channels and Insights in a couple of weeks.

  5. I prefer the old channel layout. After this dumb change I am moving off of youtube and to other Video Sharing Sites.

  6. The new channel design looks great! However, there are a few problems with it: There is nowhere viewers can like, favourite, share, embed or read any information about any of the videos! Viewers would have to go to the actual 'watch page' to see that stuff. There also doesn't seem to be a way to set the featured video to play automatically when someone visits my channel page. These two things are VERY IMPORTANT! Also, how can the featured video be changed? Does it automatically feature the most recent uploaded video? Thanks!

  7. I would be curious to know the rationale behind making these changes. What actions are you (YouTube) hoping to encourage by content creators and viewers with this change?

    I tried it and I really don't like it, and immediately switched back. I agree with Melanie -- removing the truncated description is a real drawback and will reduce views (although Melanie, there is a way to auto-play the featured video).

    The only positive thing I saw was that the design looked cleaner. And I liked the "add links" feature in the profile section. Okay...BUT

    But all the options are removed: color and font selection, ability to move elements on the page, ability to feature 6 or 12 videos and playlists, less space for text descriptions, subscriber and subscriptions view removed (hate that -- seems much less social), friends removed.

    I think giving "Feed" its own tab is overkill. That information is really adding that much to the YouTube experience. Maybe if it were recent comments or something, but even then...

  8. please keep it the same i dont not like the new layout at all, youtube is perfect how it is and needs NOOOO changes, your ruining everyones background they have made and would ask for u guys to put it back to the way that it was before thanks

  9. I have to say the same here as i did in the original feedback i gave on this issue, i still dont like it and cant see why you guys want to change it, it still looks like a school project to me. There's issues with this layout from the get go, no autoplay feature for your videos, no ads on main channel page or when someone looks through your videos on the main channel page which means partners loose money and lots of it if they get thousands of page views a day or week. I think the issues Melanie and fletcher-prince.com made are also very valid. You ask us what we think but never seem to take notice anyways so whats the point in asking us if you dont listen. If you took the time to view videos people have made about this page layout change then you will see most are very negative

And whilst i'm on my soap box when is youtube and google going to do something about the adsense interface so we can keep tabs on all our youtube channels which we have partnered videos on, we are told we have to keep tabs on our ad clicks but how are we supposed to do that when the adsense interface dont show all our channels, also how are we supposed to know what channel is being attacked if we cant see on the interface. It may serve you folks at google and youtube better if you sorted out those issues instead of worrying about changing channel layouts. Rant over

  12. I HATE THIS NEW VERSION. Change it back ASAP. I want the old, old version back!!!! Why must you guys change the layout every two months?! Can you guys just leave it the way it is!? Everyone loves the classic youtube version. Just stop fiddling with the layout and let it be!!! >:|

Ok so i've spent a whole day checking out the features, i tried to put website link in the page via the tabs, dont work and keeps saying ERROR only 50 characters allowed even though the site address has less than that, cant add my fanpage or my google+ pages via that medium either, frankly it sucks. Go to watch a video and talk about page clutter, if my kids rooms were as messy as that i'd ground them, all this nasty blackness sucks on the video page, no banner for us full partners if we want a page background, wtf is that all about, also we loose our unique tab on the video page for a little square avitar, oh and lets not forget the fact that when we use the standard ad layout we dont get the clickable square ad on our channel page either which means we can loose money, sorry guys but you couldnt have done a worse job of that even if you tried.

  14. Seems like the only thing fixed from the TERRIBLE Cosmic Panda layout was the aspect ratio of the thumbnails -- but they still appear in 16:9, 16:10, and 4:3 aspect ratios in various places on this new design. Pick one, and stick with it... please.

    PROS:
    + Thumbnails are big - the "blogger layout" seems conducive to grabbing views on older content.
    + The header bar with videos/subs/view counts is nice and clear.
    + Showing channel title instead of username is nice.
    + The banner exists (it didn't in Cosmic Panda)

    CONS:
    - No Side-banner image
    - No listing of "Shows"
    - No option to feature the most recent upload
    - About Me section limited to a pathetic 200 characters? ... AND hidden below the fold.
    - Branding Box been reduced to a useless tower of links on the side? I want to include show schedules and descriptions - not a bunch of links without context.
    - No opacity options for modules
    - Personal account avatar needlessly cropped? I just don't understand the point.

I just don't understand this change at all... the existing format has worked great for 6 years - and everyone is familiar with it... why not slightly tweak the UI / look of the original... instead of completely restructuring the entire channel page? Please TRY HARDER YouTube... many of us depend on this site for our livelihood... and it seems like you just change it around for no reason.

  16. Has anyone else successfully applied image mapping to the new channel design? I've created a new image map with the new background (banner built in and channel pushed down) but nothing is clickable.

    Is this feature not enabled yet or am I doing something wrong?

  19. Stop messing with the YouTube design and focus on making things actually work! All of these cosmetic changes may be pretty, but they impede navigation and tend to hide or remove the features I like best. I would be happy with YouTube moving back to their 2009 design as long as everything worked reliably.

    I DON'T WANT A PRETTIER CHANNEL PAGE, I want longer charts, more and easier interaction with my friends, and a sub box that reliably delivers ALL of the videos I subscribe to.

  20. These new channels suck. Change it now or im leaving! Im not joking! YUour about to lose a longtime youtuber who has been watching for 5+ years. Please don't keep this Cosmic Panda crap. I want the old channel back, please! From a longtime youtuber, please listen!

  21. How about we have an option to have the older channel design AS WELL as the new channel design?
    As youtube being a CREATIVE place... why are we all FORCED to have our channel in a certain way and then FORCED to change everything to adapt the the NEW design? Especially when the design we have works.... I think these new designs should be completely optional... Bring back the old youtube channels...

  22. What a hideous mess. Please listen to the feedback given especially the constructive criticism. If you intend to ram the new design down our throats at least have the decency to give us the option to stay with the old version rather than the new.

  23. I quite like the new design but I am unable to add my weblinks to the right side of the page. I enter urls in the fields provided, click "Add", and nothing happens.

  24. Where did my subscription feeds go??? Now I can only see a handful of commercial channels when I go to my subscription page. I used to be able to see the daily posting of ALL my favorite channels!

  25. If you want to remove the new youtube layout simply go to your browser settings and delete the all of your cookies and restart the browser.

  27. By the way, I have now managed to add my weblinks on the right of my channel using another computer with Firefox 8. I don't know what the problem was.

  30. There are a lot of things missing from the new design, including partner customization options. It really is a terrible design that doesn't feel as personal as the old. It feels a little sterile. The navigation is not as fluid, and although it puts the VIDEOS more forward, it also takes the personality, functionality, and interactivity out of the experience. I changed back even though I gave it a fair shot. I like being able to put in my own "promo" box, above banner, etc. It makes the page more branded and lively.
