Closed account removal concludes today. You may see drop in subscription count.

On Wednesday, we reminded you that we’ve been removing closed accounts from YouTube over the last several months, which has caused many of you to see decreases in your subscriber counts. We’re doing this because these accounts do not drive views to your channel.


Today, the last of these accounts will be removed, meaning you can expect to see additional decreases in your subscriber counts throughout the day. This will conclude the removal process, so starting tomorrow your subscriber counts will reflect actual changes in your subscriptions.

We also realize that the public subscriber count on your channels and that in Analytics have not been consistent. Moving forward, changes in your subscriber counts will be accurately reflected in YouTube Analytics, and Analytics will also show you newly closed accounts that have been removed:



You’ve worked hard to build loyal audiences, so we understand it’s jarring to have seen your subscriber counts decrease as we’ve removed closed accounts. It’s important that you have the most accurate data regarding your audience composition and engagement, which is why we’ve removed these accounts.     3. All you would have to do is actually read and you'd find out why so much hate. YouTube is lying in this post. The issue people are complaining about is that active YouTube users are being randomly unsubscribed from channels they want to watch. That's what everyone (the big name YouTubers with huge channels and the regular guys like me who just want to watch new content from their favorite creators) are upset about. This has NOTHING to do with dead accounts being deleted.

    4. 'Cause YT weren't just deleting "Dead" accounts as they claimed. They've been removing live subs, as well. Hell, I seen a few ppl, that have been subbed to me, for well over a 1year and a half, re-sub to me, and I was like "Wtf, said person, has been subbed to me, for a GOOD year now, why are they re-subbing, to my channel?" Because of this, and the overhaul of the site, I'm losing views, and have been for the past few months now. :/

  9. Yep I have lost about 2500 subscribers and I loved it. No sense in having dead accounts being subscribed. Now it is up to me to rebuild. I have two options, I can go to ebay and buy some LOLOLOLOL or I can just make some good quality videos. Ebay is looking better all the time. LOLOLOL

    Thanks guys so much for doing this. I know many people were upset with YouTube over this but I myself am thankful for this service.

    Now hopefully you can redesign the subscription feed to where it shows us VIDEOS instead of the feed. We don't need to know when someone picks their nose, we just want the videos.

It wasn't the fact that they were deleting dead accounts, it's because while they were doing the process, they also was removing a lot of LIVE accounts, causing ppl to have to re-sub, to the person they were subbed to. Hell, some folk CAN'T even sub said person back. ;(

    Because the algorithm that YouTube has been using to get rid of these so-called "Dead" subscribers is flawed. It's causing ACTIVE viewers and subs to be unsubscribed, EN MASSE.

    Nigahiga, Onision, whiteboy7thst, boogie, myself, and more popular YouTubers, with views in the millions and subscribers in the hundreds of thousands or more, have received THOUSANDS of messages from active viewers saying they've been unsubbed from our channels against their will this week. We've all made videos about it and started a large discussion, but YouTube has ignored our claims and instead keeps releasing these stupid blog posts that in actuality are spreading misinformation.

    I'm one of Machinima's top partners and I've notified them of the situation. They're currently speaking with YouTube as I type this message, as many of Machinima's affiliates are being negatively affected by this issue. Hell, my channel alone has suffered RECORD LOW VIEWS all throughout this week, and absolutely nothing has changed; it's that thousands of people have no idea I'm putting out new content because YouTube's "cleanup" effort has done far more harm than good.

    1. You're not the only one Phil. I'm affected by this too. It's enough to make me want to puke. What YouTube has done has like you said done more harm than good. I hate what Google has done and because of this, it's affecting me monetary wise because like you I get paid to do what I love to do. As a result of this, I can end up losing a lot of money and it can hurt me badly.

Look Philly, I'm a machinimanista too, and the problem that is far bigger than fake sub numbers, bolstered by that silly "Other Channels Box" inflation from 2010, is the non monetized mobile views. Also, the subscription area stinks because watched videos stay put, versus disappearing after being watched of clicked off. In fact, I unsubbed Machinima because my effing inbox was constantly jammed with their junk.

    3. Exactly, I unsubbed Machinima for the same reason. In this new yt layout, you can't see different creators' content, as it's all buried under the content of the channel which uploads the most. New subscription box is very poor and not well thought about.

      Also the highlight feature and having it as default is not logical. It's not a facebook. We don't have people spamming about the games they played or some pointless status updates. If we subscribe for a channel, we want to watch it - this should be standard, default option. It's very unfair on the content creators, who will now loose their views coming from their subscribers.

      I agree with what someone commented under the previous article, YouTube should have at least one serious content creator on their board, and before making and changes to the functionality of the site, they should consult such a person, and ask how he sees it can affect his channel/content creators in general. It seems they have no idea of how the changes they make affect partners and all the content creators.

There's a new huge note there saying to look at this "closed accounts" line, yet it quite simply isn't there.

    I'll tell you what's killing me... non monetized mobile views. I have two channels and one is 75% mobile views and got 1,000,000 views in the last 30 days. Instead of bringing in $2,000, I made $500. The other channel is at 50% and I had 500K views. At the end of the year that is some serious coin... and you people want to talk about fake subs being removed?

      Also, this issue has nothing to do with whatever kind of partnership agreement you have, or how much money you make. This is the equivalent of you walking into the IT department of a firm to complain about your last paycheck being wrong. Take it elsewhere.

I wanna be honest without insults, I don't think insulting is a good idea to make things better, I'm a youtube partner, I think is a good idea for u guys, but for me I think the number of subs should be the same one, because that keep us motivated at least u know how many people was interested on your channel before at this point, I don't believe that all those people watch your videos anyways, I think it wasn't a good idea to put the number down, I lost almost half of my subscribers, most of my followers are asking me what's wrong with me, and I feel very sad and completly unmotivated, I don't know what to do. this is very very painful for me and I look like a "looser on youtube" :( What I should do?     1. You are no loser, at least I will continue following you, you are a witty YouTuber. Please, continue working, your videos are great!!! We are all unmotivated, as far as I can see. This is just one of those lows you get after so many ups that YouTube gives us.

      I usually get a lot of subscriptions when I upload a video and two days ago I uploaded a new video and I only got one suscription since that day... incredible. My usual suscription rate is 2-3 susbcribers a day and when I upload a video is about 10-15 subscribers for three days... and I only got one... I guess YT is also unsubscribing my recent subscribers... it is a pain, I guess it all goes back to normal soon! I also notice I get less views now.

    3. It's a blow to the ego indeed, and it almost had me on the verge of deleting my account. (Why upload at all if by the end of things, I might be down to two subscribers)? Thank god I only lost a few hundred in the pricess. If my viewers were unsubbed by mistake, it's not hard for them to resub. At least I will know who my loyal subbies are.

  26. If we can trust the post above from the YouTube team.. Can we assume the bad weather is over? It seems every step I take, I'm knocked back 3 more.. Even after EVERYTHING, I still have hope for my channel and it would be nice to know though that the major changes are done.. ..for now.

    It is nice having a more accurate subscriber number though.. I think its silly having 5000 subs and only getting half that in views, I can agree with that more you made, but if you are taking faithful audience from me... that would be a shame.

  31. The real question is what does youtube consider inactive accounts? If I enjoy watching a popular youtuber, but then I go on vacation for two weeks, am I considered inactive and am automatically unsubbed to him? Seems to be like google has no idea what they are doing running youtube. I've never agreed with any of their new changes. I think the new channel and homepage layouts suck and are restrictive, and I think they just continue to alienate viewers more and more. The only reason they are the number one video site still on the web is because there is no competition.

    What can I say, I shouldn't be surprised at all by all of this. I mean, google offers absolutely no customer support whether it's by phone or e-mail.

    1. I agree! I finally make it up to 2,030 subs again, after the 1st clean up, and what happens? I get pushed back down to the freakin' 1,000's again! I'm sick and tired of uploading all this damn content, and YT keeps doing this stupid ass "Cleaning business" and pushing me down to the 1900 mark again. Fuck!   35. I tried to find a post about this but I couldn't find it so I'll comment on this one...

    On this week (since wednesday, I think), recommended videos are appearing on my Subscriptions Videos area instead of appearing on the side. I don't know if it's just me or if everybody has this problem, but now is really difficult and confusing to find videos of channels I'm subsribed to, because I have a enormous list of recommended videos (most of them from channels I've never watched before) filling up my YouTube homepage.

    Also, when I check the "Everything" option from the "View" dropdown the "Load More" button on the bottom of the page doesn't seem to work.

    I'd like to ask the YouTube staff if they could fix this as soon as possible.

  36. You're trying to make our Subscriber count accurate - great, but you are failing because you removing ACTIVE accounts from our Subscriber numbers. Unfortunately this is even happening to me as a Watcher. You guys are ignorant and aren't listening to the people who make this site what it is.     When you look at a playlist, it tells you what videos you've watched, so why is it still unsubbing active accounts?

  42. The "closed accounts" line that YouTube tells you to look at in Analytics doesn't exist. Probably was promised by some code monkey, then never got implemented because it didn't work properly. Just like most of the changes on the site: promise the world, implement before proper testing, deal with the reprecussions and bugs later. Horrendous way to run a business, especially when some of us make our livelihoods off the site, but hey! They're Google, right? They have enough money to buy the most server space of any video-sharing website, so they have the clout to do whatever they want.

    1. Because YouTube probably turned off their "algorithm" that was deleting actual old accounts...but never figured out what it was unsubbing LEGIT ACTIVE USERS. They do this all the time: make a site change looking to do something, but it has some horrendous side effect. There have been useful site features that haven't worked for as long as 6 Months at a time until YouTube finally fixed them, because of other unrelated changes, and the fact that YouTube has no Customer Support so they ignore any kind of feedback from users.

    5. I've noticed some users are more affected by this than others. For example a lot of popular YouTubers have lost loads because they probably had lots of deleted/closed accounts anyway from their high sub count, however I am not popular but have been on YouTube for about 5 years and suffered a dramatic lose in sub count also, because I've had a build up of deleted/closed accounts in my subscribers list. I noticed that some of my other friends who joined YouTube in like 2010 didn't really lose any maybe like 50 subs or so whilst I have lost about 800-1000 (i'm not even sure its still dropping).

  52. I just came up with a solution until Google "gets it right" I am going to be starting a vlog playlist, and the first one will be about "subscribers lost"

    Anyhow, in the video I will ask my subscriber to add my channel to there favorites.. And I will explain what is happening. HA! Lets see google "undo" that! A lot of my subscribers REALLY love what I do here, so I know many will do this, or at the very least become aware of what is happening. Its all I can think of, we are so powerless to the changes YouTube/Google throws at us.

  53. I don't mind inactive accounts being deleted, that's fair enough, but what I don't get is why sub count does not accurately reflect the e-mails I recieve notifying me of a new subscription. I've been noticing a sharp decline in growth just recently, when the "purge" should not even affect me as my channel (FFTKGaming) is not old enough to have inactive accounts subscribed.
    So there's the possible issue of "active" accounts being deleted AND New subscribers do not appear to be being counted in alot of instances. some guys with really small channels (who can check their sub list without getting a headache) seem to be confirming.     Their channel layouts are horrendous coupled with their related and subscriber videos made it a complete clusterfuck.
    Their customer service is pathetic and unreliable. They're not helpful for shit.
    Their algorithms are buggy hence why this is what happened with the subscribre drop.
    And flat out lying to the users who despite their proof that something is wrong is disrespectful to us and it makes them look really bad.

    Above all else, YouTube has failed. I could blame Google but at least they listen to us. YouTube does NOT.

    WTF is youtube playing at ? I'm not payed to do this thank god so I don't care about money but I do enjoy knowing what people think about my work and right now I am getting hardly any views etc.

I love reading these comments... they remind me of the comments that would have been left by those that got left behind in the Buggy Whip industry when the automobile became king, or the Radio industry when Television emerged. I have two accounts. My main one went from nearly 23K subbies at the first of the year, to about 19.5K today... my secondary account hardly dropped at all. The reason being that my primary account was the beneficiary of being in a few key "other channel" boxes in 2010. I went from 1100 to 22,000 in six short months. Of which less than 5% actually subbed to me... they subbed to others, but didn't have the wherewithal to NOT sub to the long list of "other channels". I'm glad that YT is removing the deadwood... in the meantime, both of my channels have boomed in views. One has been averaging more than 30K views (with spikes near 60K) and 15K (with spikes over 30K) for the other. Views equal payments, subbies equal squat.

  72. I've lost at least 4,000 active subscribers this month alone, from the hundreds upon hundreds of comments and messages I've gotten from viewers who have been unsubscribed from me repeatedly without their initial knowledge or consent.

This is very important and need to check when you visit a channel if he is already enrolled to yours, in fact, under the present system, if you have many subscribers, it's really hard to scroll one by one all the pages that list subscribers!     1. Active users are being removed on purpose. YouTube is trying to get people to leave their site so there is not as much traffic. My "elevator1tom" channel peeked at 188 subs before this shit now it got down to 152.

I posted my first video in several months (since about the time the purging began) and had a comment already from someone who said they had been unsubscribed and only found about the video from a friend. Crazy thing is, that person was one of my most active subscribers and comments on almost every video. My video views and interactions are wayyyyy down from normal after the first day. There's no doubting something got screwed up in this process. I don't mind the intent of the purge, it just seems to have been executed incorrectly. It is also continuing because every channel is taking a hit around 5-7am every morning and there's no way those are newly closed accounts being purged because the volume is too high.

  81. It's done it again, over the week I gained some subscribers back, but now i've lost -10 in just a day, don't tell me this is happening again! And another thing I went to analytics set the date range as 'this year' and apparently out of the whole thing Closed accounts -304 but that's not true! In February I lost like 400 and then in May I lost about 500 so that statistic is a lie! They need to fix this thing because I've worked hard like everyone else and its dishearting!

  97. There's something not quite right about this; I can understand removing closed accounts from the tally but I've lost many live accounts in the process including all of my Subscribers from the UK?!!!

    I had 121 UK Subscribers before the purge began and have lost 123 to the cull, leaving me with -2 Subscribers from there! There must be a glitch in the software they're using as there is no way all my UK Subscribers were dormant accounts.

    Another strange aspect of all this is the discrepancy in the Subscriber tally on the Channel and the Analytics page. My Channel page displays 714 Subscribers but on the Analytics page it shows as 606, with 219 lost over time?!!! Around 175 of the lost Subscribers are due to the recent cull.

    2. I agree man! I used to get 300 views, in a matter of a day in a half, or at least 3 days, depending on the content I upload. Now, I'm barely scratching 200. Mind you, I got these views, when the OLD yt, was still in effect. If YT would just LEAVE shit alone, THAT CLEARLY doesn't need to be fixed, we wouldn't be HAVING all these got damn problems.     If you SAY you can't allow users to reopen their Accounts than MAKE those Usernames Available.
    IF you SAY They will be Unsubscribed from other Channels, DO IT properly.
    IF you SAY we are not allowed to change Usernames. THAN have the option for username change. Look At Twitter and DeviantART. and other sites might do it rarely. both sites lets you change Usernames.

    and STOP saying the only way we have to make a new accounts to consider that "Changing usernames" that username change is annoying. and If you allowed people to change username than you will save a lot of space on your servers. Not kidding.

    Overall YouTube is the #1 website that hates Username URL changing so much. yet some people like and dislike the change but If people want to change usernames than do it. It will be less than annoying If people change usernames and not have to at least close their account.

    Once I release my OWN community site, I will let anyone change their username however they want.
