Tags removed from video watch pages

With more videos coming to YouTube every minute, we're always developing ways to help people more easily find, watch and share the videos that matter most to them. Our data showed publicly displayed tags were failing to help users find the videos they wanted to watch, so we've decided to make them private.

Tags remain an important way to organize and help others find your videos. We strongly encourage you to continue tagging videos -- this will help increase your audience by improving the discoverability of your content.

As always, you can apply tags to videos in the upload interface, or in the metadata editor, which can be accessed by going to your video manager page and clicking “Edit” next to a video. When choosing your tags, it is important to select those that reflect your video. We provide suggested tags in the upload interface and metadata editor, if you need help choosing.

  2. Helping or not helping - what difference does it make if the tags are private? If they are good, they will remain good. If not, they will remain bad also when hidden. It seems to me that the only goal of this is to make changes everywhere and all time, whether needed or not.

Going FORWARD is a good thing, going one step sideways and 30 steps backwards by implementing the new youtube homepage without the option to show uploads and ONLY uploads from your subscriptions is NOT how you evolve to the better, that's how you take a site, toss it down the toilet and flush it down, and judging by the sheer stupidity present in the changes, I think the site's about to fall into the toilet already.

    1. I dont think you understand what tags do, when someone searches for a video or a google search the tags will make the video easier to find.

  6. Judging by the search engine i'd tend to say that tags now have a very little importance in your algorythms. Is it still recommended to also write the same tags in the video description ?

    I know you're working hard to improve and make youtube the best way to entertain people ;
    I just hope it'll go in the same direction with people who are tryin to entertain others even if they're not yt stars or yt stars' friends or paying millions to get seen..

    Making videos and high quality contents demands an enormous amount of time/energy. We'd like to have a chance to be seen by "the world" and not only the friend & the troll in our shadow who's 'disliking' every single thing we make..

    Sharing with others is also a great experience and I hope you'll keep on encouraging this too :)

I know a lot of people who used the tags of their videos to convey information that they didn't want to clutter up their video description with in the tags, and lots of people who left little jokes in the tags. They were both useful and harmless, and I believe removing them is entirely unnecessary.

So while I was asking for quite a while already (and I guess others did too - like Gari Gonzalez above) for a way to flag the use of abusively wrong masses of tags, you simply remove them from what is visible... that's a way to "solve" the problem too. So, honestly, I don't like this change at all. Having the tags visible doesn't harm anything. Even if they aren't used as much, the possibility to see them isn't a bad thing. Sometimes I have the feeling some of the IT guys at google/youtube develop their own job creation plan just to stay employed.

  10. So basicly what is happening here is that the tags are unable to be seen in the description of videos, but you can still add them into the video via 'edit video' and they will have the same effect as they did before. So the only thing changing is that the joke tags will not happen anymore?

  11. I am strongly against this. Tags were an important source of comedy and storytelling in many YouTube videos, and were fun little easter eggs. By removing them, you have done nothing but hinder the Imma community.

  13. I don't like this at all, but then when do youtube even care about what we like/don't like anyway, I'm pretty sure they won't change this for us which seems the percentage of people who have noticed this highly dislike it, but why would they care?

    If the hidden tags thing works still then fine, but I'm not sure it does because I did a test on a video from a couple of days ago, I put in a word from the video's title in the search and then a word I know was in the tags too and guess what, the video didn't show up, but it shows up when I search something that's in the title.

    So either Youtube are lying to us here and not really telling us the truth or this is something that has a flaw and tags being hidden from view aren't working as good as they should have been.

    You be the jury on this, I'm not sure Youtube are telling us the truth here or if they are this tag idea is flawed, I tested it just now.

  18. Tags also have been removed from the Youtube API. This is causing me lots of headaches because I WAS using them to display videos on client websites. For example, the multimedia page has a section called video galleries. Each gallery is based on a tag. Click on that gallery link and you will see all the videos that were uploaded to the client account and have that tag. Now none of it works and i'm scrambling to figure out a work around. !#%*@($

  21. @Tommy I am too! Guess what @Ranjith...they have now taken that away too. There is now literally NO way to get a video's tags through the API! This has completely destroyed what I've been doing on many of my sites. I honestly don't understand this...if you're keeping the tags...why can't we access them through the API???!?!?!????!?!?!????????

  22. More than anything I feel like this was a payed off way to help youtube keep the big channels monopolized. If no one can keyword something similar to the top videos than nobody can compete as easily with them since you dont know what their keyworded at, regardless of title.

    There is absolutely no logical purpose to it otherwise, other than to feed the bigger giants on youtube and pick on the small guy.

  37. i'm having problems searching my videos on youtube. i've properly tagged them with my complete name both in the "edit" and "upload interface".

    i was able to search my videos on youtube before just by typing my whole name, because i tagged it like that, but now, it doesn't show up on search. please help =(

  52. The tags are still available. They just aren't publicly viewable on the video pages of Youtube themselves.

    You can use this free useful desktop software that will extract ALL the video tags for any Youtube video. You just enter the Youtube video URL and you're good to go.
