We've Updated the Feed on the YouTube Homepage

Today we’re rolling out some updates to your homepage feed to provide an even better viewing experience. Most of these changes are a result of the feedback you’ve given us. Here’s what you’ll notice:

Bigger video thumbnails with more information about uploader activity
We restructured the design to show bigger, higher-quality thumbnails. We’ve also included more information related to the video. If an uploader has commented, posted, or added a video to a playlist, we surface this information so you can get a better picture of all the activity related to the video.


More control over what you see in your feed
We’ve introduced a menu that lets you quickly control what content appears in your feed. To bring up this menu, simply hover over an item in the feed and click the arrow that appears in the upper right of the item.  You can then choose to hide the item you have selected, opt to only show uploads from that user, or unsubscribe from that user, all directly in your feed.


A differentiated view of videos you’ve already watched
Videos that you’ve already watched are clearly marked in the feed, so you can better decide what to watch next.

A note about Highlights view
The Highlights view, which is currently the default view of activity on the homepage feed, is designed to ensure that a diverse set of creators appear in a viewer’s feed based on their subscriptions. Some creators publish videos once per week, while others publish many videos every day. Highlights views helps ensure that prolific creators don’t crowd out more occasional publishers in your homepage feed.

We’ve seen the Highlights view increase overall video viewership, and we’ve heard your feedback on wanting a way to easily see all content from your subscriptions. If you want to see each and every item from all channels, you can always select the Everything view. We are continuing to build features to make it easy to know when your subscriptions have new content, so watch for more improvements in the future.

    6. Here here. I was only able to tolerate the last major update, now it's even worse. It's just more inconvenient to use. I want to see a whole list of just uploads from subscribed channels. I have missed many videos because I can't see all uploads from the past couple of weeks quickly.

    7. It's really stupid that I now have to click on an arrow for each subscription to show upload only from them. I don't care if they commented on a video or added a video to a playlist, I only want to see uploads. Having to click on the arrow for each of my subscriptions is time consuming, especially when you have a bunch of them.

    8. Highlights = missed videos, not seeing more videos as the article seems to claim.

      Default doesn't show all the videos that highlights shows (uh... wat?) so that also has missed videos.

      What we want is a video time line that consistently shows what videos are uploaded when. If paulsaorsjr uploads a video then xisumavoid then generikb, I want those three videos to show up in my feed in that order (newest first, of course).

      Is it really that hard to understand all the work you're putting into whatever it is you think your doing with the feed is a waste of time? Feeds are a well understood user experience. They are the fundamental technology of blogs. Would you want to leave out or reorder blog posts? I think not.

      I am tired of missing the videos that I want to watch, and the only way to ensure that I have seen them all is to go through each subscription one-by-one and see if something new is up.

      Quite honestly, it is by far easier to simply follow youtubers on twitter and watch for uploaded videos there. Twitter does feeds correctly. Youtube does not.

      Your fancy feed is broken. Fix it. Or at least provide an interface that allows a stand-alone program to access and present the feed correctly.

    12. Every recent update has been a joke thus far. It is just making it harder and harder to follow multiple subscriptions and see the upload activity that we want to see. In addition the 'hide activity' feature is not working anymore. Bring back the old old layout, where we would see each individual subscription uploads. These new layouts just keep making the youtube experience worse. It is so bad that in some cases I'm not even subscribing to channels. Just manually looking them up because of all the unnecessary clutter that has been added, and lack of functionality in the new layout.

    13. Seeing the next videos above the screen was very useful, and it would also be nice to be able to view all the videos that are broken up into segments. Also having more pages available above to see all the channels videos would make sense, this new look does not help and makes it confusing once you get used to a format.PLEASE BRING THE OLD FORMAT BACK BUT WITH MORE VIEWING OPTIONS AND ALSO IN ORDER WHEN THEY ARE BROKEN DOWN IN SEGMENTS.     14. I definitely agree! I want to watch a video from a channel and then see their latest uploads without having to leave the page to go to that channel's personal page! Taking away this option doesn't make people WANT to go the channel page, it just makes me want to stop surfing in exasperation.

    15. The suggestions on the right side of the screen are of videos that I have already watched. It used to be a list of videos that were relevant to what was currently playing. Can you please bring this back? I'm used to finding videos of interest in the suggestion bar. Not videos that I have watched in the past.

  4. Everything seems to be ok except for the highlights option...

    Your reason for their being a highlight option is kinda useless, if people want to see the people who post once a week, they can just visit their channel to see the video.

    I recommend you get rid of the highlight option overall so people can view the homepage for everything automatically...

  5. Good improvements, but please make "everything" the default. Important videos are getting lost amidst the highlights. Or at least add some kind of indicator on people's uploads to show they have more unwatched videos, if they've been posting more frequently than most.

  9. It seems that once you switch to "Everything", it will remain that way. Previously, everytime you visit the homepage, it would revert back to "Highlights".

  11. I'm glad youtube is making even more improvements.

    As a content creator (40K Subscribers) I would love to see things made easier for the users. They shouldn't have to go looking for my last 3 videos.

    The fact is, most people do NOT go on YouTube everyday. Make it easier for the users by showing them the last 3 videos as well as the most recent on the feed.

    I believe there used to be something similar.
    Youtube will earn more views from subscriptions this way.

  17. If I watch a subscriptions video somewhere other than the YouTube homepage (tested with stock iPhone app, Flipboard) they aren't marked as watched on the homepage.

    Is this something YouTube can change or does it not have access to this data? And is this different on say Android phones?

  19. Very bad change to our youtube homepage. Please give us a "Display Density" option like in gmail. If people want these giant thumbnails fine, but please also let us have a compact display - it was still too large (for me) before the update, let alone after. Also, let us use our entire screen - again, like we can do in gmail. Titles, text and so on being split to multiple lines when we have the screen realestate to not make that necessary is irritating.

    Do like the thumbnails fading out though.

  20. I like this better, but seriously, it's not up to YOU to tell ME what I want to watch. If I subscribed to a person that uploads 20 videos per day, I did that because I want to watch his 20 videos per day. And if I don't, I will unsubscribe. I find it dubious that overall video viewership is going up; maybe for certain people. I find that I miss a lot of what I want to see because of this filter. Also, why does the "Highlights" filter not return any more results when you hit "load more?" Is this a bug?

  24. I cannot understand why the youtube language defaults away from English on our channel. Apparently this happens to people who operate bilingually and therefore have another keyboard set for occasional activation.

    Yeah, yeah, yeah, you can navigate to here and there and click on here and select something there - but it is never permanent. Next time you go to youtube, it's bloody German again. Yes, I can read German, and French, and Italian and a bit of Spanish, too, but I want my stuff in the language of the land, English, unless I say otherwise. That must be really hard to understand.

  25. Why you guys keep insisting that "views are up" due to highlights is beyond me. We don't care if, overall throughout the entire Youtube service, more people are clicking on videos in the subscription feeds than before.

    What we care about is that OUR subscribers are NOT seeing OUR videos in the feeds, and channels that used to get a few hundred thousand views to a new video in a few days are now getting a couple hundred, if that.

    Get rid of highlights, it has made the subscription feed do the opposite of what it should be doing.

    Also why in the world do you think the feeds need larger images? That reduces the amount of space awarded to each video on the screen, resulting in less videos being seen in the subscriber feed.

    If you actually want to improve the subscriber feed then just add tabs for each category, and make it display the latest videos that fall under those categories from the channels a person is subscribed to.

    For example, clicking on the 'Gaming' tab would show all the latest 'Gaming' category videos from all subscribed channels.

    Your 'one feed, let an algorithm decide what the user wants' method is just too narrow-minded and this narrow-mindedness is making it harder to get our videos seen than it should be.

    And get rid of the 'suggested channels' function, it is only benefiting a small number of channels -- primarily those who already have hundreds of thousands of subscribers. There are tens of millions of videos on Youtube and you are doing things that result in only 1% of them actually getting promoted by the service. The rest stay buried in the ocean of content.

  26. I would like to have the ability to remove a subscriber, We use to have this. just bloking someone isn't enough. We need to be able to compleatly remove them so they dont receive any updated/new videos that we put out. Or give us the ability to compleatly block an account from viewing our account/videos. That would make alot of people happy. Especially those that have alot of subs but not very many views. They can do a subscriber perg. For my self : I hate looking at my subs and then looking at my views and seeing that only 1/4 of them are watching my content I want to get rid of those that dont watch .... I want quality subs , not quantity... understand? :)

  27. Why is it that I get the 'old' layout in one browser, and the new one in another? I get the all white one in Firefox. One thing that annoys me greatly, is that I cannot find the 'show only uploads option'. Yes, you can press the little arrow on an item in the feed, and select there that you only want to see uploads, but that doesn't do anything for me. I can click it whatever I want, but nothing changes.

    I just want to ONLY see uploads, and nothing else. How do I do this?

    One of the most annoying things...
    Why on earth was the 'show uploads only" option removed? Yes, you still can change it one by one, very practical and not time consuming at all with lots of subscriptions.

    I also agree with hauptmanngurski. Please let us set a default language. I'd like to have english at all times and not the language of the country I live in.

    Beginning with the big layout change back in march, youtube has gone downhill. I guess you won't change back a thing, so the only option will be to delete my account and use the bookmark system of my browser.

  29. Today, videos from people I am NOT SUBSCRIBED TO keep showing up in my subscription feed. I am SO frustrated and I cannot seem to find a way to get them to go away. They seem to be the same videos that are on the youtube homepage when I am not signed in, except when I sign in they STAY there and there is no "x" box to get them to go away. They are videos I do not want to watch and they have very disturbing thumbnails. Please, please, please help. I am so frustrated and upset. :/

  33. As others have said, the "highlights" by default is a very very bad idea, especially if we are to believe your official version.

    The user decides which channels he/she wants to follow, so YouTube does not need to "help" with that.

    If your real goal is to be able to control which content is shown on the homepage you should take a look at Facebook and what that has done to them.

  39. There is an option to only show uploads from people you subscribe to, but now it is quite tedious to do:

    Remember as mentioned in the article if you mouse over a video, you'll notice a tiny little arrow in the upper right corner of the highlight box. Click on it, and you will see "Only show uploads from this person". Now, if you have tons of subscriptions, I've yet to see a global upload-only view option... which really, really sucks for those who have a lot of subscriptions.

  42. I hate how when I go to the home page, it takes me to all these "recommended" videos when I ONLY want to see my subscriptions. If I haven't already seen the 'recommended' video then its most likely a video I won't want to watch. I only go to youtube for one thing, to watch videos from channels i'm subscribed to, now these changes have made that harder. I also couldn't care less about what video the guy i subscribed to commented on, i just want to see their uplodads and its a pain to always have to hover over it to click 'only see uploads' for every channel i've subscribed to

Also the 'only show uploads from such-and-such' button doesn't really work as well as the 'hide activity' because whenever I go back to the page all the activities I've hidden still pop up.

  44. Anyone know how to make the "Everything" view sort videos by upload date? I have videos that I've watched from "2 days ago" appearing in the feed BEFORE videos that I haven't watched and that were uploaded "37 mins ago"!

    I've already noticed that I've missed some videos and that some "episode based" videos are appearing in the feed out of order. With over 200 subscriptions, I'm starting to rely on Twitter telling me when new videos are uploaded from my subscribers.

  46. This new subscription feed is complete shit. I subscribed to channels to see when they uploaded new videos. I don't care a toss if they like something or comment on something, it's not relevant to me at all.
    Since it is not possible to set "uploaded videos only" and Youtube keep making improvements that defy that description, I have deleted my Youtube account. That's what we do when you refuse to listen to your users.

Dont want recomendations mixed with subscriptions, I don't want to see what someone uploaded 4 weeks ago in my main feed above what others uploaded 4 hours ago, I hate google plus and have just had to go through all my videos as for some reason they all turned "private" when I unsubscribed from google +.....I want the old you tube back! :(

    Like, have 16 subscriptions, yet I NEVER see ANY of their new videos. Why? Because my freaking homepage is full of recommendations of videos from years ago!! It's sooo annoying. >.<

  76. How about a feature where "X" youtuber has uploaded "Y" video and 10 others. Meaning it shows one entry in the feed for each youtuber you're subscribed to per day and if they have multiple uploads it acts as a dropdown menu and lists the 10 other uploads (or however many were uploaded, obviously). It is beyond frustrating having a person you're subscribed to uploading a ton of videos per day spamming the feed page.

    This feature is a necessity for people who are subscribed to youtubers who put out a lot of videos per day.

  79. What is this /feed/subscriptions?feature=mhee crap?... Now I see 5-6 videos I have already watched on the main page. And have to sift through EVERY subscription I have to hunt down new uploads everyday. When my_subscriptions?feature=mhee&dm=2 showed only new and unwatched videos... why wouldn't you AT ELAST make it possible to filter for all new and unwatched videos from all subs?... How is searching for hours better than having 20+ new videos from all subs show up in a que everyday?....
