Channels just got simpler to navigate

Today we’re simplifying the browsing experience on channel pages by merging the Feed and Videos tabs into one “Browse videos” tab.

This new tab will house all Channel activity: uploads, playlists, likes, activity, and comments. Upon clicking the “Browse videos” tab, by default your viewers will be taken to Uploads, but they can easily view other activity using the menu. For example, everything you used to see on the Feed tab can be viewed by clicking on “Activity.” 



Our testing showed that this change makes Channels easier to navigate. Read about the changes in more detail here, and let us know what you think.

  1. Your testing is wrong; I personally know many of us who actually USE youtube will find this infuriating when taken in context with the previous layout.
    Sorry, but that's just how it is. And I'm not alone in my thinking. Please, add an option for us die-hard "rebels" who just want the old youtube layout back; don't fix what isn't goddamn broken!

  4. What about this update making things "simpler" exactly? It made things even more complicated. I don't know if you realized this, but a tab that says "browse videos" wouldn't logically have a person's channel comments under it because there are no videos in the channel comments, obviously. Also, a person's "activity" is not completely related to a "browse videos" tab either because not all stuff in a person's activity are videos. Not to mention that adding tabs within other tabs within other tabs just makes things more convoluted when there is plenty of room to add more tabs to the bar. Just look at the example you used in the above above, you could fit like five more on that bar.

    So if you really want to improve the channel designs, here's what I suggest. Put every section on a person's channel on it's own tab. It's as simple as that. One click to get to anything means nothing is really hidden, not two to three like the current setup. That will also make navigating through a channel faster and more intuitive.

    So it would be like this:
    Videos tab: a person's videos and playlists.
    Activity tab: A channel's activity only.
    Comments tab: A channel's comments only.
    Store and Featured tabs: Only if people want to use them of course. (Heck, I think people should be able to show or hide any tab they want on their own channels)

    Remember that the idea of updating something is to make things easier, not harder.

      Yeah, that was another issue we all had when they changed that too. It's like we get used to something they "update", then it gets changed a short time afterwards again and we have to relearn how to do those things once more.

    I'm sorry, but what you might see as "cool" or "useful" might not actually be any such thing... Youtube looked and felt a LOT better before Google came in, although I am very happy with SOME of the features you've brought to it. The UI was GOOD before. Now it's getting less and less user-friendly - I mean, the majority of features you push in with your UI changes are completely redundant unless you have VERY specific tastes. Out of curiosity, just who DOES test the new stuff?

  9. This is not a good move: when I browse I usually ONLY want to see that user's videos. Don't try to sell complications as simplicity - it doesn't work.

  12. I hope that you are aware of the situation that constant changes in your UI will drive people to other video platforms. If this is what you want, you are on the right track.
    To me, a person that works with YT a lot, this is unnessary change of things that just rolled out without thinking about the sense of functions in the first place.
    Could you please leave the UI constant for, let´s say, one year or so?
    That would be so nice.

  20. There has been a really bizarre sequence of design decisions on YouTube recently. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for 2 levels of navigation in this case, and "Browse videos" is a misnomer. The worst thing of all in my opinion are the hidden dropdown menus under "View", which shouldn't be dropdown menus at all but rather radio buttons.

  21. Is very compact but not easy. Just a few things could be improved, I would love that youtube can save my settings how my channel look, for example I like more the list option, and not just on my channel but to all channels that i am visiting.

  25. Where does all this "testing" data come from? I love YouTube to pieces, but every time a silly update like this is made, little to nobody seems happy about it, including myself. You're destroying the functionability of the site by simply following these ambiguous "test results." I suggest a more public way of testing new concepts on YouTube...

  28. Please, please, please, please, oh please put it back. In lieu of that then give me some control in the configuration. I DON'T CARE what some stranger recommends, nor do I care what videos those I subscribe to watch. This is asinine and difficult to find my way around in.

    At this point, I am planning to make sure I have email subscriptions from all the artists I already listen to and only visit their pages when they upload a new video. I will not be seeking out new artists from the home page.

    By the way, the button that says "just show uploads by this artist" doesn't work.

I think my Playlists are no longer made available to others, just as Yahoo long ago did away with my music shared with others (as a radio broadcast station might) and more recently, MySpace consolidated my five music playlists into one so-called "radio" station where I have to share a very few of my selections with many more unwanted MySpace selections. In my view, these technology companies show even more chutpah than cable tee vee companies, who sell us overpriced digital television or tv channel services, and then sell our eyeballs, at a value of $50,000 per viewer, to advertisers.   34. Lately, youtube channels have a "browse vidos" tab. When clicking on this tab the video makers uploads are supposed to be in chronological order by most recent to earliest. As of now, The videos under this tab are all mixed up. For example, the first video can be "published a year ago" and the next can be from yesterday. I hope you find a way to fix this soon because I cannot view what some commentators have recently published. Thank you for your concideration.
